For Sale: Exceptional Fisherman’s Cottage. Just Don’t Look Behind You

September 30th, 2009 rich No comments

I came across this story while reading the BBC online.

In Kent there is a three-bedroom “not to be missed” bungalow for sale at Romney Marsh, Dungeness, for a paltry £247,000.

In the ad the real estate agent Geering & Colyer points out its proximity to a nature reserve and photos show it in rural isolation.

They did however omit one itty-bitty detail. If you look around you can see not one but two nuclear power plants right there in your backyard. With a third scheduled to begin construction shortly.

The New Romney Town Council said it was “disingenuous” to forget to mention this little detail, but in an eloquent defense of this over-site a spokesman for Geering and Colyer said: “I’ve got no comment to make on it.”

On the upside “Dungeness A” has been offline since 2006 and “Dungeness B” is only going to be active until 2018.

As a side note:

From the BBC:
An investigation has begun after an alert at Dungeness nuclear power station in Kent.

British Energy said the incident on 29 June was in the fuel building and was not connected to the reactor at Dungeness B.

Everyone should feel secure because the problem wasn’t in the reactor, just in the building that stores the radioactive fuel. –That should do wonders for property values.

And You Thought the Stationary Bike You Hang Your Clothes On Was Too Much Work

I found out about this guy via the Flickr Blog.

Flickr member James Bowthorpe, a.k.a GlobeCycle, is about to complete the fastest circumnavigation of the Earth on a freakin’ bicycle. He started on March 29th, 2009 with the goal of raising £1.8 million for research into the causes of Parkinson’s Disease. Starting and ending in London, England, James will have ridden over 18,000 miles in about 150 days.

Because he geo-tags his photos you can follow his progress via this map.

Mad as a Hatter

Back in the day, when Hatters (hat makers) tanned the animal pelts they used with mercury.

This continual exposure to mercury caused a build up of the element in the person’s system (mercury poisoning) and evidenced itself in mental and nervous disorders that were often diagnosed as insanity.

This is where we get the saying “Mad as a hatter”.

Old Links

I have been going through the links that Old Dude had on this site and found a couple of people I follow.

Covertress: An intelligent woman who’s blog I enjoy, but one who’s politics may actually be to the right of mine. –That pretty much leaves her out there with Dick Cheney and Attila the Hun.

The World According to AmericanGoy: A guy who’s firmly convinced that Israel has undo influence in Washington and that the financial bail out is just the feds helping their friends. In other words a conspiracy nut.
Fair warning. If you read close and check references, it might make you more than a little uncomfortable to see how often he’s right.

In keeping with fair and unbiased reporting:

Here’s a recipe for fermented Salsa.
Don’t let it ferment too long or it gets too sour. –it will continue to ferment even after you put it in the refrigerator.

Your Immortal Soul May be Worth as Much as $500

September 5th, 2009 rich No comments

In Latvia there is a man who will lend you as much as $500 for anywhere from 1 to 90 days at a rate of 1% per day with only a single piece of paper to sign. –The only catch: He makes you promise your soul as collateral.

Viktor Mirosiichenko said his company would not employ debt collectors to get its money back if people refused to repay, and promised no physical violence.

Signatories only have to give their first name and do not show any documents.

“If they don’t give it back, what can you do? They won’t have a soul, that’s all,” he told Reuters in a basement office, with one desk, a computer and three chairs.

He said about 200 people had taken out loans over the two months the business was in operation.
